[PAPUA PART 2] STUDENT ACTIVITY “SIR, WE WANT TO LEARN!”

“Sir, Before going home we go out of class (go home) do not forget the love (quiz) multiplication and English e …” The sentence is able to melt the heart and increase the spirit of a teacher to teach. Papua holds hundreds and even thousands of passions attached to the students there. All the limitations do not dampen their learning spirit.

The portrait of education in Intan Jaya district is far from good, especially in terms of facilities. Less classrooms, less textbooks and teaching aids. Educators are limited. On the other hand, the public has begun to realize the importance of education as reflected by the increase in literacy rate in 2011 by 27.78% to 28.8% of the total population in 2013 (BPS Papua data).

Students at Intan Jaya do not wear full uniforms as in Java or elsewhere. They wore white uniforms with their trousers without a tie, hat or shoes. But this is not an obstacle. Educators will not scold let alone drive away their students that way. For teachers, attendance at school and learning is more than enough.

I am a honorer teacher at SD YPPK St. Misael Bilogai, Intan Jaya Regency for several weeks. There, I met students who have the spirit of learning and big dreams. This is very different from what I know from a variety of information that tells otherwise. What I saw they were willing to sacrifice a lot of things including playing time in order to participate in learning together in the study group “Cartenz” formed KKN Team Unit PPA-01 2016. Once again touched to hear their desire to know new knowledge.

“…. Viki’s siblings I have to go to school (after I graduate from school) I am going to Java, I am going to school there .. “The sentence is a piece of farewell letter from one of the 2nd graders of SD YPPK St. Misael Bilogai. Limitations of imagination about the outside world do not make them recede. Their enthusiasm for learning and curiosity remains remarkable.

Papua holds hundreds and even thousands of passions attached to the students there. Do not we kill with the stigma that is inherent in our daily life about them. getting education is a right together, having a spirit is amazing.
